The conference was held at Zayed University in Dubai, from 22th -24 March 2010, from 9:00 am to 3:00pm every day. It took place at the Executive Dining Hall- ZU convention center level 2. Lots of student from ZU participated. It was a success conference based from the interview i did with the faculties of College of Communication & Media Science

Will McCarthy talked about “Ethics of moderating global online discussion groups”. McCarthy’s speech was well delivered and was interesting. He mentioned some strong arguments that proved ethics and conflict are somewhat related. “Localism regionalism and globalism don’t that much of a difference in online discussion groups. It comes from the subculture”, looking at this quote you might think it’s an invitation for conflict but McCarthy also talked about online discussion groups, which have different sections for different fields of interest. So if a person joins the discussion of their field of interest you can avoid conflict.

McCarthy also mentioned that test based online discussion groups don’t have control, the owners are the gatekeepers of the website therefore they can control the content depending on their beliefs. This might cause problems between users of the website because they have a different view to the owners’. Problems can arise to the unprofessional codes of ethics. This power should be used correctly; this power should be used fairly and not corrupted due to personal views. The users cannot be controlled therefore some of the users content that are placed online can harm and insult other users.

So in conclusion, without ethical codes and ethics conflicts and problems can arise.

The Global Media Ethics Roundtable

The Global Media Ethics Conference was held in ZU-Dubai Campus. It was under the supervision of College of Communications and Media Sciences (CCMS), and it took place in the Convention Centre. The conversations and negotiations about the Media Ethics continued running for three days, from the 22nd of March till the 24th. Different Media angles were discussed during the roundtable, but mostly the discussions were based on a good experience from the participant.

Dr. Ron Wolfe and Dr. Adel Jendli attended the conference.

Mr William McCarthy and Mr James Piecowye were part of the discussions.

Overall, the conference showed a strong effort from CCMS faculty, they helped in organizing, they participated, and discussed lots of the issues with their students and were able to welcome their opinions. “Thank you” is a must for all who helped in holding this important conference.

GLOBAL MEDIA ETHICS REOUNDTABLE

The conference stayed 3 days from 22nd of March to 24th of March. It hold many interesting topics that relate to Media in different aspects. All the discussions were based on the members' Academic papers. The conference invited members from different local and international universities such as : AUD , AUS , UAEU , University of illinois , University of Wisconsin, University of Bahrian , Sheffield University and finally Zayed University . The representers of ZU in the conference were Mr James Piecowye and Mr William McCarthy who had an interesting discussions and speeches.

The conference had many good and beneficial conversations and negotiations between members that hold my interest.

Overall , " GLOBAL MEDIA ETHICS ROUNDTABLE " was wonderful and well organized. It welcomed all the CCMS students which is a good way to involve the students in this kind of media conferences to know more about the media world and how it works.

Each day with each time they was talked about different subject,, for example,, one day they talked about Arab Advertising, which was done by Carol Moufarrej, American University of Dubai, UAE spoke about “Ethics of Health Advertisements in the Arab World”. She said: said. It is illegal to advertise medicine so companies adopted codes of ethics. Eight million dollars are being spent on herbal medication while 75 thousand on importing those meds.We really was enjoy this conference, because it was organized well, and have important issue that has been discussed.

One of the speakers on Monday March 22:

Muhammad Ayish, professor of communication at the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Dean of the College of Communication in the same institution from September 2002 to August 2008. He have over 60 published research articles and book chapters in international journals and books in both English and Arabic. His latest publication is: The New Arab Public Sphere. Berlin: Frank and Timme (2008). He was one of the speakers in the first day of the symposium and his paper was about television reality shows in the Arab world.

Ethics of Health Ads in the Arab World

The Global Media Ethics Roundtable Conference today was quite interesting.

The talk about Arab Advertising, which was done by Carol Moufarrej, American University of Dubai, UAE spoke about “Ethics of Health Advertisements in the Arab World”. Her speech was informative as well as enlightening view of “Arab Advertising”.

“The reason to have code of ethics is important when you are dealing with international clients” Moufarrej said. It is illegal to advertise medicine so companies adopted codes of ethics. Eight million dollars are being spent on herbal medication while 75 thousand on importing those meds. Lebanese government's law of ethics wants to forbid advertising for meds but it seems it may pass.

“Using media for public health messages is an oxymoron as media promotes consumerism which acts like a ‘quick fix’ and that’s not the way we deal with health issues.” Moufarrej concluded.

Carol Moufarrej discussed the ethics of health advertisements in the Arab world. Among the important elements of ethics that were discussed at the roundtable, what i found interesting was the way the Arab world advertises their messages.

Moufarrej mentioned that Arabs relay on conveying their messages in ads by their intuition of the requirements in the Arab world. Which is why ads in the Arab world lean towards conservatory visuals and modesty culturally to keep the traditionalist approach going.

She also added that media in the Arab world is young, new and still developing which is why the ethics are still maturing.

An important point that Moufarrej made notice of is that ads in the Arab world are taken hostage by entertainment, thus, the message that is trying to be conveyed is lost and an ad then becomes merely entertainment.

What is the Roundtable all about?

Most scholars and media professionals agree that globalization has been responsible for major transformations in the structures of media production and reception. As media worlds get rearranged, it has become necessary to focus on the ethical principles that underlie media practices and content around the world. The project of global media ethics has been to bring together and intellectually engage scholars, media professionals, and students from various regions and from varied theoretical perspectives. Most of our work is based on normative ethical principles focused on integrating local cultural and professional practices in our discussions of global ethics. The main focus of the Roundtable in March 2010 will be “Freedom and Responsibilities in Global Media Ethics.” Some suggested topics are (but not limited to): social responsibility of media, truth and accuracy, universal ethics, ethics and media globalization, economic, political, religious, and cultural factors influencing media ethics, new media and ethics, and codes of ethics.

The Global Media Ethics project is based loosely on the principle of the “Doha Debates” (sponsored by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science & Community Development). The Doha Debates have been a unique venture, providing a battleground for conflicting opinions and arguments about the major political topics of the region. The Global Media Ethics Project hopes to provide such a platform and also form intellectual alliances with scholars and media professionals in the Middle East. The first Global Media Ethics Roundtable was held at Stellenbosch University, Stellenbosch, South Africa in March 15-17, 2007. The scholarly papers presented during the roundtable were published by Heinemann as an anthology titled, Media Ethics Beyond Borders: A Global Perspective (edited by Stephen Ward & Herman Wasserman) and republished by Routledge for the North American market. A similar book is being planned as an outcome of this meeting with the publisher chosen in consultation with the host University.

We are expecting each participant to present a research paper at the roundtable; unlike regular conferences where participants are allowed no more than 15-20 minutes for their presentations, this roundtable will allow participants an hour to present papers and lead discussion on their topic. Total number of participants will be approximately twelve.
